Sunday December 4th 2005 was the running of
the 23rd California International Marathon...

Unfortunately, things did not go as I had hoped or expected...
The temperature was 30 degrees at race start and I was dressed for it...
My first half marathon was great, passing 13.1 miles in 1 hour 39 minutes (on pace for a 3:20 marathon)...
I slowed down some during the second half, but passed mile 22.5 around 3 hours and 10 minutes, hurting but still well on my way to my best race and personal record. Here are some photos from 22.5:

I kept running the next 3 1/2 miles, and recall passing the 26 mile marker just behind the 3:45 pace group. That is when tragedy struck, and I went down... Fatigue, dehydration, hyponatremia and as it turns out Acute Renal Failure and Rhabdomyolysis. So instead of a photo of me crossing the finish line, here are my finisher pictures:

24 hours in the hospital and 20 liters of fluid resuscitation normalized my renal function and I was released...
Not the race I was hoping to run... well, it was for 99.2% of it.
Thanks to many of you for your concern.
I am doing better now, physically anyway.
We'll see what happens in Florida
(check back and I'll let you know)
